affogatos, kate's ice cream cookie sandwiches and some good tunes by ivytide. dare i say it was ideal summer day???
it’s an affogato summer
so the sun has been blistering HOT and i rediscovered my love for affogatos about two weeks ago. naturally they have been on my mind since, and i knew that saturday cafe was due for a new menu item. what an indulgent, special thing - marrying the sweetness and childlike joy of vanilla ice cream with a strong, bold kick of a sophisticated espresso. to be so real affogatos are kind of symbolic of entering adulthood???

DITCHFIELD SCOTCH CAP
okay the beans you choose for an affogato are seriously make or break. so a lot of serious thought and pondering went into this choice. saison des pluies, my local neighbourhood cafe, has a great selection of ditchfield’s coffee that i’ve been dabbling with and this one was sooo IT. notes of chocolate, grilled nuts & rich and creamy - that just screams ‘drip me over vanilla ice cream’. and BOY was it GOOD.

YAMABIKO BLOOM
a yummy sweetness that lingers, with aromas of berry jam and rum. this is so good for an iced americano - i think it will be a new fav summer espresso roast for me!

the perfect affogato (imo)
as we know, careless ratios can make or break some of the finest delicacies. affogatos are no exception to this rule. so here i am, doing the lord’s work, breaking down the ratio of the perfect affogato so you can have the affogato summer of your wildest dreams.
while i am not italian, my credentials are that i went to italy once on a high school trip. not to mention the many affogatos i served to my guests today were met with ouus and ahhs and some words along the lines of “vic you have crafted the most delicious harmony of espresso and ice cream i’ve tasted in decades and i fear every sweet treat i experience moving forward will live in the shadow of this very affogato”. their words, not mine.
THE BREAKDOWN -
3 scoops of vanilla ice cream (we went with ripples)
1 shot of espresso (ditchfield - scotch cap)
saturday sounds
today we were graced by an acoustic performance by mtl’s favourite indie band, ivytide!!! we huddled around on my balcony to listen to jamie and nathan play a few songs from their new album, portable darkroom - which you need to listen to like yesterday.
